AI Content Is Not The Problem. Forgettable Content Is.
An Ahrefs study covering hundreds of thousands of pages found no evidence that Google automatically punishes a page simply because AI helped create it. AI-generated pages can rank! View the Ahrefs Study.
That is not permission to open the content tap and flood the website with whatever falls out.
The data also showed that heavier AI use correlated with weaker indexation and fewer impressions, while predominantly human-written pages made up most of the strongest results. Ahrefs was careful not to call this proof of an automatic penalty.
This is a distinction that matters.
Google is not grading your writing process, it is judging the output.
Publishing faster is useless when the content gets worse.
AI can support research, structure, analysis, editing and production.
Used properly, it can make an experienced team faster.
Used badly, it creates industrial quantities of average content and this is where the risk sits.
Generic pages with no first-hand experience, no useful distinction, no evidence and no proper understanding of search intent are easy to produce and even easier to ignore.
Adding more of them does not create authority.
It creates a larger clean-up job.
Action:
Use AI inside a controlled editorial process.
Every important page still needs:
A clear commercial or informational purpose
Accurate information
Real expertise
Evidence or useful examples
A distinct point of view
Proper human editing
A reason to exist beyond keyword coverage
If nobody with experience is willing to own the final page, it should not be published under the brand.
Content needs clarity and a reason to exist before it earns rankings. It needs even more when Google and AI systems begin extracting answers instead of simply ranking pages.
PunkFox Take
AI is a production tool. It is not authority, judgement or experience.
Businesses obsessing over whether Google can detect AI are asking the wrong question. Ask whether the page deserves to outrank anything.
If the answer is no, the problem is not the software used to write it.
The problem is that you published it anyway.
